How to Overcome – The First Step
A big question for all of us in life is: “How do we overcome adversity?” For believers in Jesus Christ, we know that in order to overcome any obstacle, we must stand firm in our faith and rely on Jesus and His power, strength, righteousness and might. But how do we do that?
When we, as followers of Jesus, find ourselves facing trials and tribulations and temptations, how is it exactly that we stand firm in our faith and have the strength to overcome? What are some things that we need to do to grow, mature and be able to persevere?
First of all, we really need to get a grip on our identity in Christ. One of the main ways that the devil tries to trick us is to get us to think that we are the same old sinner and that we will never be able to measure up to God’s standards enough to walk with Him. Duh! That is why Jesus died for our sins! To redeem us unto Himself so that we can walk with Him and so that we can boldly come before God’s throne and have a love relationship with Him. There is no one righteous, no not one. Only Jesus is righteous and by faith, His righteousness is transferred onto us. We are blameless in God’s eyes when we are covered by the blood of Jesus. There is no way that we can earn God’s love. We cannot make God love us more or love us less. Hebrews 11:6 tells us how we can please God: “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” By believing in God and in His Son Jesus, by knowing that He is good and that He will reward you for desperately seeking Him and by actually looking to Him, this will please God.
Included in understanding our identity in Christ is realizing the authority and power that we have as believers to resist the devil and to cast him aside (James 4:7). We have not been given a spirit of fear. We have been given a spirit of love, power and self control when we are born again (II Timothy 1:7). We do not have to be afraid of the devil or of man or of our circumstances because greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (I John 4:4). We also have been given power and authority in Jesus’ name to do the things that He did for His glory and to glorify the Father. Jesus said that those who believe in Him will do greater things than He did, and to me this means that because we are to be representatives of Jesus, together we should be multiplying and doing those works that He did as a multitude of believers (John 14:12). Because Jesus returned to the Father and sent us the Holy Spirit to indwell us, teach us all things and fill us with power from on high; we are able to do the very things that Jesus did in this world by His name, His power, His strength, His might and His righteousness.
When we understand that when we are born again we become a new creation and we cast off the former things that we used to think and believe and do, then we can walk in newness of life and walk in victory and overcome the world, the flesh and the devil.
For now, in touching upon the subject of how to overcome adversity, let us realize that we cannot do it on our own. As humans we have weaknesses and we have needs that we cannot meet for our own selves. Only our Creator and our Savior and the filling of the Holy Spirit can really reach the deepest needs of our souls and give us the power to truly overcome any adversity. Let us acknowledge our need for Him and humbly ask Him to save us, to come into our lives, to fill our hearts and awaken our spirit unto His Holy Spirit. Let us surrender our will to the will of Jesus for we cannot know the Father without acknowledging and knowing His Son, Jesus. We cannot be sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise without accepting Jesus as our Lord and allowing His blood to cleanse us, our consciences, from our mistakes and sins. Let us allow His sacrifice to pay the price for the things that we have done that cause us to feel guilt and shame and let no more condemnation come to us. For when Jesus sets us free, we are free indeed. In order to overcome adversity in this life, let us realize that this is a temporary home and one day we are going to face our Maker and go on to our eternal destination. If we know Him on earth then we will be with Him in eternity to enjoy a good reward. If we deny Him on earth and reject Him while we are here, then we will face eternity without Him and receive eternal punishment. Let us come together and worship Jesus and recognize our Creator, our Father, as our Almighty God who loves us with an unfailing love. Let’s get to know who we are in Christ Jesus and be strengthened in our faith by Him and in Him and for Him. This is the first step in how to overcome adversity. Know Jesus.
